How to root T-Mobile LG V20

Dear readers, today we shall guide you through the steps using which you can root your LG V20 T-Mobile smartphone. Requirements

  • A LG V20 T-Mobile Smartphone
  • One PC pre-installed with the LG V20 drivers as well as Android SDK tool
  • A original USB Type-C cable
  • Backup of all your device data in case they get lost during the rooting process.
  • At least 70% power back up to avoid unexpected device shut down.
  • Enable USB Debugging on your device by going to Settings > Development > USB debugging. Remember to untick the Debugging box when you are done with the rooting procedure.
  • Uninstall the antivirus app in your smartphone & Disable the antivirus program in your PC.
  • Unlock the bootloader of your LG V20

How to Root the T-Mobile LG V20

  • First, you need to download the necessary files on your computer: binaries from here, TWRP recovery from hereand the SuperSU file from here.
  • Connect your LG V20 T-Mobile with your computer
  • Now open a cmd window on your PC inside the folder where you saved recovery files. To do that, “Shift + Right click” on any blank space inside the folder and choose Open command window here.
  • Once opened, get a root shell on your device by using the Dirty Cow exploit, type in cmd:

adb push dirtycow /data/local/tmp

adb push recowvery-applypatch /data/local/tmp

adb push recowvery-app_process64 /data/local/tmp

adb push recowvery-run-as /data/local/tmp

  • The binaries will be now pushed to your smartphone
  • In the same cmd window enter

adb shell

cd /data/local/tmp·

chmod 0777 *

./dirtycow /system/bin/applypatch recowvery-applypatch

to get full permissions

  • Now execute the Dirty COW exploit. Still in the same cmd window enter:

./dirtycow /system/bin/applypatch recowvery-applypatch

./dirtycow /system/bin/app_process64 recowvery-app_process64

  • Once done, enter “exit”.

In order to check if the commands were succesfully applied, use the following command (in the same cmd window): “adb logcat –s recowvery”.

If everything works well, you will see command lines as the image below. Then, press ctrl+C to exit

Install TWRP recovery and flash SuperSU

  • Still connect your V20 T-Mobile with the computer. Move the TWRP recovery file in the Android SDK folder and the SuperSU file in your LG V20
  • Open a cmd window in SDK folder and type in:

adb shell reboot recovery

adb shell getenforce

cd /data/local/tmp./dirtycow /system/bin/run-as recowvery-run-asrun-as exec ./recowvery-applypatch boot

  • Now flash TWRP recovery on your T-Mobile LG V20 by typing in the following commands:

run-as su

exit

exit

adb push twrp-3.0.2-1-h918.img /sdcard/twrp.img

adb shell

run-as exec dd if=/sdcard/twrp.img of=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/recovery

  • Perfect, the custom recovery mode will now appear. Select “wipe data factory reset”, “wipe cache partition” and “wipe dalvik cache” then flash the Super SU file you just transferred into your device.
  • Once done, select “Reboot system now” from main menu of recovery
