The strategy of Samsung isn’t easy to grasp. Although the Galaxy A5 (2017) and the J7 (2017) comes from two different series, there are still in competitive respects. So, what is the difference between them?
A similar chipset, but there are some differences in design
The S range is the hottest trend and the A and J ranges follow then. Both the Galaxy A5 (2017) and J7 (2017) were released this year and are based on the Galaxy S7’s design. However, there are some differences between these two devices.
The Galaxy A5 (2017) has a slightly more premium design and a better finish than the Galaxy J7, but the performance of the device is acknowledged, and there is an evolution over its previous model. Plastic has already been changed to metal. The obvious thing comes from the size. With the dimensions of 152.5 x 74.8 mm, the Galaxy J7 is slightly larger than the A5, which is only 146.1 mm long and 71.4 mm wide. The screen size is also different: the J7 features 5.5 inches while the A5 comes with 5.2 inches.
There are some visible differences at the first glance. For instance, the IP68 certification is found on the A5, but it misses on the J7, which makes it vulnerable to water and dust. Fortunately, the microSD card slot appears on both models.
A very different performance
The Galaxy A5 (2017) is set as a mid-range smartphone, while the Galaxy J7 (2017) is an entry-level device, so it also leads to their performance. The J7 is powerful enough to bring the satisfying experience for basic operations: web browsing, messaging etc. However, if you want to get a great gaming experience, the Exynos 7870 octa-core SoC with the Mali-T830 MP1 GPU is not a good choice for you. Although the US model comes with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor, we only mention the Exynos variant. The Galaxy A5 (2017) is quipped an Exynos 7880 processor and the Mali-T830 MP3 GPU, which is estimated to be three times stronger over the J7).
Another big difference comes from the internal memory as the J7 only has 16 GB, but the Galaxy A5 doubles that. But in case you run out of space on both devices, there is always a microSD card supporting up to 256 GB. The RAM amount is the same on both devices with 3GB.

Even though Samsung has upgraded its devices, performance is of practical interest in OS, and the two phones are also quite different. The A5 (2017) is quite outdated, as it’s just pre-installed Android 6.0.1 out of box, but the Android Nougat is available, while the J7 (2017) runs on Android 7.0 by default.
One more thing to keep in mind that although we can consider about the software versions, many entry-level users just want a smartphone that can meet their daily requests. They don’t care about the current operating system on their device, so both phones are suitable.
The same strength
The Galaxy A5 (2017) is powered by a 3,000 mAh battery, which is expected to survive an entire day with a full charge. The Galaxy J7 (2017) offers a bigger battery with 3,600 mAh, so you can easily survive the day without much worry. The real difference between these devices might be the charging speed. You will find that charging on J7 isn’t as fast as on the A5, as it’s not equipped the USB Type-C port.
Although the J7 (2017) and A5 (2017) can take beautiful shots in their range, their’ strength is not the camera. With a f/1.7 13 MP rear camera and a 16 MP selfie snapper with an aperture of f/1.9, the J7 seems better on paper. But, it gives the mixed performance. So you should also take photos in a good environment to obtain the best quality photos.
